Barbara Allgood
Partner: Steve Appel
Date of bio: December 2004
Seizing a job opportunity at the Prescott VA to escape Los Angeles in 1992, BJ chose a move into a new job, a new marriage and a quieter lifestyle in Prescott.
Having grown up in Miama and studied nursing at the University of Florida and Public Health/Epidemiology at the University of Puerto Rico, BJ finds the Veteran's Administration, where she is the Infection Control Nurse, a challenging work environment. Sheʼs completed 25 years of federal service.
Contra dancing, Audubon society, Kayak paddling, a book club and Toastmasters as well as membership in Nursing, Healthcare Quality and Infection Control groups keep BJ stimulated. Sheʼs traveled in France, Japan, Mexico and Cuba but felt that her most interesting trip was to China with a group of American Acupuncture doctors in 1998.
Since she looks forward to retiring in the next few years, BJ is searching for meaningful activities as well as a community in which to share her future leisure time. Weʼre grateful that GPUUC seems to satisfy those requirements. BJ lives with her husband, Steve Appel, an artistic welder, and two cats.

Arturo Alomar
Partner: Juanita Alomar
Date of bio: May 2007
Arturo met his wife, Juanita, at a wedding eleven years ago. Arturo says he knew "she was the one" for him the minute he saw her! Both were living near Big Bear, California, where she was a secretary for a doctor and later for a bank, and Arturo combined carpentry and massage. Though not affiliated with a UU church, they became impressed by UU principles when they attended yoga retreat weekends at de Benneville Pines.
To get away from winter snows, they moved to Hilo, Hawaii. Reared in New York, by Puerto Rican parents, Arturo felt much at home and found glorious subjects for his oil paintings. After seven years in Hawaii, Juanita longed to be closer to her children. Two of the three live in Prescott, so this was a natural choice. Her other daughter, and Arturo's two children by an earlier marriage, live in California.
After moving into a condo development here, the Alomars met Granite Peak member Guyla Segal. They were central to her support system when she became so ill, and bought her unit when she had to move to San Francisco.
